Established in 1931

1930

Proposal for the new school, land identified.

In 1930 the Lamorbey district of Sidcup was expanding rapidly and it became clear that a secondary school for boys would be needed in the area.

Founded at 27 Station Rd, Sidcup

The school, then known as Sidcup County Grammar for Boys, is founded. The position of first headmaster was entrusted to Charles Reginald McGregor Williams, MA Docteur de I’Universite de Paris, formerly headmaster at Uckfield Grammar School.

The Early Years

The school badge is designed by the headmaster and an original school song is created.

The King's Jubilee Year

The purple blazer is devised. Given their high cost they were deemed optional and many students continued in their grey flannel suits.

The move to Crittall's Corner

On 11th November 1935, the school began moving into a purpose-built site at Crittall's Corner, Footscray. The four youngest groups were chosen to move to the first completed wing in the new buildings. Sidcup Arts Centre provided further temporary classroom space.

Two extra houses created – E and F The Sidcup County Old Boys’ Association (SCOBA) is set up.
1938-1939

1938-1939

The school is renamed Chislehurst and Sidcup County School. Thursday 15th September 1938 saw the last muster at Station Road and the site was finally vacated for the 'glasshouse' at Critalls Corner. The official opening of the New School Buildings by Charles Robinson Chairman of the Education Committee, London County Council, occurred on 9th February 1939.

Lamorbey site on the horizon

In 1946 the Divisional Executive decided that Chislehurst and Sidcup County School would be moved from its site at Crittall's Corner to a much larger space at Lamorbey in Sidcup, where it would be situated alongside a newly built technical school, Hurstmere School. Meanwhile, the site at Crittall's Corner would be converted into a secondary modern, which would later be known as Kemnal Technology College.

The name Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School for Boys comes into usage.

First Headteacher retires

The decision to move the school to the Lamorbey site was deeply opposed by Headmaster, Dr McGregor Williams, who wanted his school to remain within the Crittall's Corner building, of which he was particularly fond. He decided to retire prior to the move to the new site, stepping down in July 1953 and dying five months later.

The move to Hurst Road

The move to the present site in Hurst Road in 1954. The new site was officially opened in a ceremony led by the Lord Lieutenant of Kent and the Bishop of Rochester. The new building had been constructed on land once belonging to the Medieval manor of Lamorbey House.

Mr Michael Brown is appointed Headteacher.

1973

School becomes co-educational

The first girls arrived at the school in September 1973, representing the sixty female pupils who had the highest test scores from the local primary system. Accordingly, the term "for Boys" was removed from the school's name, while hockey and netball were introduced as sports for the girls to play.

1975

The 'new block' is built

In 1975, an additional building, the New Block (now the Humanities block) was constructed.

Mr John Sennett joined the school as Headteacher.

1981

The school turns 50

The school celebrated its golden jubilee with a variety of events, including a Jubilee Walk that took in both Station Road and Crittall's Corner; these activities were used to raise money for an extension to the school's library.

Mr James 'Jim' Rouncefield was appointed Headteacher. The Chronicle cover features a drawing by Quentin Blake.

1999

A newly rebuilt Music Block was ceremonially opened by the Mayor of Bexley. The funds for the building having been raised by the Governors and the CSGS Parents’ Association.

2004

Jubilee Pavilion built

The school constructs a new sports' block, the Jubilee Pavilion along with a new Astroturf pitch. The school gains Sports College status.
2005-2006

2005-2006

New Head and School Crest

Dr Joseph Vitagliano is appointed as the sixth Headteacher. In early 2006 the orginal school crest has been replaced with a new adaptation.

2007

Illustrious Sedcopian celebrated with new building

The Quentin Blake Block was built for £3.5 million for the Art and Design Departments, which contained within it the Curve Gallery, which has since held an annual exhibition of student art, along with various other exhibitions.

The Mayor of London and former Conservative MP Boris Johnson visited the school to officially open the new Sidcup sports centre.

2009

Mr Walker becomes the 7th Headteacher

In 2009, Dr Vitagliano left and Mr Nigel Walker, the former deputy head, took over the position of Headteacher.

2010-2011

The playground facilities are refreshed. The school converted to academy status on 1st September 2011.

Sedcopian is Knighted

Sir Quentin Blake became the first Sedcopian to be knighted.

The Legacy Building addition

A new dedicated building for the Sixth Form.

Lecture Theatre created

The original sports hall is converted into a new Lecture Theatre.

The former Sixth Form Study Centre/Business block is reconstructed as a new fitness facility and dedicated to long time Rugby Coach Phil Ubee. The P J Ubee Fitness Suite was opened on 26th April 2024. The school achieves its best ever GCSE and A-Level results. The school roll tops 1500 for the first time having expanded its Sixth Form intake.

A new record is set for the number of university places achieved for the study of Medicine.

The school turns 95

A new Sedcopians Day is in the planning with an eye on the school's centenary celebrations. Plans are also underway to build a padel court to supplement the already impressive sports facilities at the school.
